Buildings Insurance
Buildings Insurance covers you against damage to the structure of your home. Internally, this includes floors, windows and doors, interior decoration and fixtures and fittings. Externally, outdoor structures such as garages, outbuildings, fences, walls, patios and driveways are covered.
Your buildings sum insured should cover the full cost of rebuilding the property and normally this figure will be included in a mortgage valuation. If you are unsure of the actual rebuilding cost there are certain policies that will cover up to £500,000 which should prove enough for most homes.
Buildings insurance usually covers loss or damage that occurs
as a result of:
• Fire
• Explosion
• Bad weather including flooding, lightning and storms
• Earthquakes
• Malicious damage or vandalism
• Freezing or burst pipes
• Falling trees, aerials or satellite dishes
• Subsidence
• Impact by vehicles or aircraft
Additional Accidental Damage cover is also normally available which should protect you if you inadvertently cause damage to your property. A buildings insurance policy will usually also cover the cost of alternative accommodation up to a certain limit, if you have to leave your home while repairs are carried out.
